Hebrews 12:14 NKJV
[14] Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:
Jesus embodies peace.
He was betrayed.
He had every right to be angry, yet He did not sin.
He extended grace to those who didn’t deserve it.
He healed those who hurt Him.
Forgiveness does not mean becoming a punching bag for those who have hurt us to repeat their offenses. It means we soften our hearts to become more like Jesus, instead of keeping a record of wrongs.
Forgiveness gives us freedom to let go of resentment, anger, and fear, allowing ourselves to heal.
This sort of restoration is only possible with God’s help.
On our own, we might stubbornly hold onto anger and resentment, ultimately making us sick.
God doesn’t want us to stay stuck in unforgiveness.
He wants us to be free.
Independence day celebrates freedom from oppression.
We can find a way to apply that to our own lives as well.
Amen.
